Classic tiles, encaustic tiles and art nouveau patterns
Encaustic tiles
Encaustic tiles are particularly known for the inlaid patterns as they appear in the handmade tiles in two-layer technique, often in the size of 20x20 cm. The encaustic tiles in marble and cement are particularly suitable for the purpose of patterns, due to the special craft technique for encaustic tiles, where a template is used for the wear layer in granulated marble. The patterned encaustic tiles are manufactured using a template with compartments in brass, where the coloured granulated marble is filled in by hand, compartment by compartment. You must imagine that the template of the encaustic tiles looks like a cut-out cake tin, where you fill the coloured marble material in each section by hand.
The encaustic tiles or simply marble- cement tiles had their heyday in the Art Nouveau era around 1900, as patterns and decoration were a characteristic of the style within architecture and craftsmanship.
Since then, most encaustic tile manufacturers, both those in Europe, Morocco and elsewhere in the world, have continued to produce the encaustic tiles with retro patterns of the art nouveau and later art deco era. At Villa Handmade Tiles, we also still manufacture encaustic tiles in many retro patterns, but also design new tile patterns that are more in line with Nordic design. At Villa Handmade Tiles, the encaustic tiles are continuously in a development process.
